Pupillage

Group 621's Application Procedure for Aspirant Pupils

  1. Aspirant pupils who wish to do pupillage at Group 621 must:

    1. 1.apply to the Pupillage Committee of the Johannesburg Society of Advocates ("the JSA"); and

    1. 2.apply to the pupillage sub-committee of Group 621.

  2. Applications to the Pupillage Committee of the JSA must be made in such manner and by such deadline as is prescribed by that committee. It is a prerequisite, to do pupillage in Group 621, that the aspirant pupil be accepted to do pupillage at the Johannesburg Bar by the Pupillage Committee of the JSA.

  3. What follows relates to applications to Group 621's pupillage sub-committee ("the sub-committee").

  4. Applications must be accompanied by a curriculum vitae, and must be received by the sub-committee, care of Jean Meiring (jjmeiring@group621.co.za or Private Bag X9967, Sandton, 2146) by no later than 31 July of the year prior to pupillage.

  5. Aspirant pupils may expect acknowledgement of receipt of the application from the sub-committee within two weeks of receipt of the application, falling which the aspirant pupil is requested to enquire whether the application has been received.

  6. The selection process and advice to aspirant pupils of the outcome will take place by the end of August (before the interviews held by the Pupillage Committee of the JSA).

  7. Aspirant pupils who have been accepted to do pupillage in Group 621 (subject to acceptance by the Pupillage Committee of the JSA) will be assigned the mentor of his or her choice or another suitable mentor, and may thereafter advise the Pupillage Committee of the JSA that they have been accepted to do pupillage at Group 621, and who the potential mentor will be.

  8. The allocation of the Group within which and the mentor with whom an aspirant pupil will be placed is ultimately the prerogative of the Pupillage Committee of the JSA and acceptance by Group 621 is not a guarantee that the aspirant pupil will be allocated to Group 621 or the mentor of his or her or the Group's choosing.

  9. Acceptance to do pupillage at Group 621 does not entail, expressly or impliedly, any guarantee of membership of Group 621 after pupillage.
